With people, the rule is never to judge a book by its cover. However, the aesthetic look of a home's exterior - otherwise known as the 'kerb appeal' - is important in attracting buyers. According to a survey conducted by YouGov, over two-thirds of homeowners prioritise kerb appeal, so this can make or break deals and either add or detract from the property value.

Not looking to sell any time soon? Kerb appeal is still important. Maintaining the exterior as carefully as you keep the interiors will give you more pride and satisfaction in your home.

How to decorate the entrance

Landscaping
Most properties are fronted by a garden of some size, and landscaping is vital to keeping this green space appealing.

Make sure to mow your lawn regularly and trim hedges and bushes periodically following periods of growth. You should also pull up any weeds pushing through the lawn, ripping them out from the root to stop them from growing back.

Adding borders and beds filled with flowers instantly adds brightness in spring and summer. Choose low-maintenance plants like geraniums rather than flowers sensitive to conditions or that require frequent deadheading.
Driveway
A proper driveway has many benefits, from providing a safe space to store your car to improving the accessibility of your home. If you're lucky enough to have the space, install a driveway to reap the benefits while you're a resident and increase the property's resale value. Ensure an even surface and decent drainage by choosing block paving slabs for your driveway rather than gravel. This is available in different patterns, sizes, colours and materials, so you can design the drive to your exact preferences.
Lighting
Illuminating the outside of your property is also useful in several ways.

For one, it makes homes feel warm and welcoming in the evenings which is especially important if you put your property on the market in winter when nights come early. When used correctly, it can also showcase the features of your property to their best advantage - and conceal less appealing aspects.

In addition, outside lights around your house help to improve security. Well-lit properties are less likely to be targeted by burglars as there is nowhere to hide, and they give the impression that the house is occupied even if no one is home.
Building
Lastly, consider the exterior of the building itself and identify areas that could be detracting from the visual appeal. This could be peeling paint on the door, dirty windows or grimy bricks or stone.

Wash windows and walls clean using appropriate products, clearing gutters of leaves and other debris while you're up a height. Refresh the paint on your door - using a weather-resistant solution suitable for the material - in a shade that you think most people will find attractive.
