As the summer gets underway, lots of people will be looking to spend as much time as possible outside. Public spaces are great, but being able to use your garden allows you privacy and freedom.

Smaller gardens can often be overlooked, but there are some easy ways to maximise the space and turn it into somewhere you can enjoy. Here are some tips to do just that.

Use cooler colours

Gardens can embrace colour in several ways - plants, decor and furniture. Picking cooler colours helps to make your garden feel larger due to the way your eyes perceive them. When planting, opt for blues and purples such as lavender, delphiniums or hydrangeas.

If you prefer leafy vegetation, you can incorporate cooler colours in your planters or flowerboxes. Any furniture you use can be painted cooler colours too, which will continue to help your garden appear larger.

Lighting

Dark corners or gardens with a lot of shade can help to draw the eye downwards, making the space feel smaller and gloomier. If this description fits your garden then it is time to think about lighting.

If you are looking to light up dingy corners you could place some patio lighting there. For a cosier feel and overall lighting, festoon lighting is the perfect choice. Not only will it help you enjoy your garden at any time of day, but the lights will reflect off the plants and furniture, creating a brighter effect all over.

Be clever with furniture

You will need to think carefully about the furniture you place in your garden. Whilst it does need to be practical, anything too large will make the area feel smaller and more cluttered.

Folding items such as tables and chairs will help enlarge your garden whilst still being practical. You can always store them securely in a side passageway or a garage so you can get to them easily.

Dual-purpose items are always useful too, especially if you have children. Tables that double up as storage boxes, for example, are amazing at hiding toys and garden games so that the adults can relax once the kids are in bed.

Embrace vertical

Smaller gardens often have walls or hedges which dominate the vertical space. These can, however, be utilised and help your garden feel bigger.

Walls can be painted in cooler colours if you desire. Just remember to buy paint that is designed for outdoor use. Walls are also great for hanging things on such as trellises. This way you can grow climbing plants and help your garden feel greener.

If you are a fan of water features you may think that they are too big for your small garden. Wall-mounted features can break up a bare brick wall whilst adding a calming water feature to your garden. The wildlife will thank you too!
